The “Magic Book” at the Shelby Township Library

As part of the library’s $11 million renovation, Katie dreamed up something special for the children’s area: an interactive, life-size storybook that sparks curiosity and storytelling through immersive technology. Inspired by a “magic door” concept during a visit to Bluewater, she worked with the team to reimagine that idea into a digital “Magic Book” with pages that come to life.

This interactive display, disguised as an oversized book, features a real opening cover and a 55″ vertical screen housed inside. When opened, it launches into a series of short, animated vignettes—each just 10–15 seconds long—designed to capture young imaginations. The content is rotated regularly, keeping the experience fresh and engaging for return visits.

More Than Just Tech—It’s Community Magic

Funded by the Friends of the Library, the Magic Book has quickly become one of the most beloved features of the new space. Families now visit specifically to experience it, and other libraries have taken note, reaching out to explore how they might bring similar magic to their communities.

Katie and Dennis also discussed the broader impact of interactive technology in libraries, from VR headsets and maker spaces to storytelling tools that foster deeper engagement with content. But the true heart of the episode lies in the story of how one idea—and a little creative thinking—turned into something that connects families, delights children, and inspires others to reimagine what’s possible in public spaces.
