Integrating Modern Technology into Racing’s Most Historic Venue

For over a century, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) has been the epicenter of motorsport history – home to the legendary Indianapolis 500 and countless unforgettable moments. With such a deep-rooted legacy, every enhancement to the venue must strike a careful balance between preserving tradition and embracing innovation. Bluewater has been proud to support IMS through a series of technology upgrades thoughtfully designed to enhance the fan experience without compromising the spirit of the Speedway. Our goal: to improve visibility, reduce long-term maintenance, and deepen audience engagement—while ensuring every addition feels true to the track’s iconic identity.

A New Life for the Scoring Pylon

One of the Speedway’s most recognizable elements—the 92-foot-tall scoring pylon—was long overdue for an update. In partnership with K-WAV, Bluewater led the effort to carefully dismantle the original structure and replace it with a fully modernized version featuring stackable LED cabinets, cable passthroughs, and precision-engineered on-site modifications to align with the existing substructure.

The result: a stunning, high-resolution digital display that maintains the spirit of the original pylon while delivering better visibility, improved performance, and future-ready reliability.

Unified Upgrades Across the Speedway

The transformation didn’t stop at the pylon. Bluewater worked across the venue to ensure every fan has a clear, engaging, and consistent race-day experience:

  • A 22’ x 12’ LED display at the start/finish line captures every thrilling moment with bold clarity.
  • A massive 42’ x 24’ display ensures fans across grandstands stay visually connected to the action.
  • 27 LED displays were added throughout the Paddock seating area to eliminate blind spots and improve coverage.
  • A 100-foot-wide, 18-foot-tall LED wall at the base of the Pagoda in Pagoda Plaza delivers dynamic race-day content and real-time analytics.
  • The Pagoda Scoring Ribbon, once reliant on an aging light bulb system, was upgraded to a vibrant, energy-efficient LED display that enhances visual clarity while maintaining the structure’s historic silhouette.
  • Additional monitors placed throughout seating areas and along the fence line ensure that no matter where fans are seated, they never miss a moment.

A Venue Evolved, a Legacy Preserved

From the monumental pylon retrofit to the thoughtful placement of displays around the track, Bluewater’s work at IMS represents the best of what modern venue technology can be.

“Our goal was to honor the legacy of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway while introducing modern technology to enhance the fan experience,” said Scott Schoeneberger, Managing Partner at Bluewater Technologies. “We’re proud to have played a role in transforming this iconic venue into a state-of-the-art racing destination.”

Today, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway offers fans an immersive, visually dynamic experience that still feels unmistakably like IMS. Every enhancement was made not to change what the Speedway is—but to help it shine even brighter for generations to come.
