Couture for a Cure Goes Virtual Without Losing the Runway Experience

For years, Van Andel Institute’s Couture for a Cure has brought guests together for an unforgettable evening of high fashion, fundraising, and support. The annual event is known as one of West Michigan’s premier fashion events, combining runway energy, entertainment, and purpose to support biomedical research and K–12 and graduate education programs at the Institute.

In 2020, the 15th annual Couture for a Cure faced a new challenge. With COVID-19 restrictions limiting in-person gatherings, Van Andel Institute needed to quickly reimagine the event as a virtual experience. The goal was to bring the excitement of the runway directly into supporters’ homes without losing the polished, high-fashion feel guests had come to expect.

The Challenge

Couture for a Cure is more than a fundraiser. It is a highly produced social event centered around fashion, community, and connection. Going virtual meant the team had to rethink how guests would experience the show, interact with the evening, and feel part of the event from home.

The 2020 virtual event needed to deliver a fashion presentation by Leigh’s, on-trend looks and new products from Artistry™, a virtual appearance by designer Byron Lars, live entertainment, a silent auction, and music from DJ Adrian Butler, all in a seamless digital format.

Van Andel Institute needed a production partner that could help preserve the event’s premier reputation while building a virtual experience that felt intentional, elevated, and engaging.

A Front Row Experience From Home

To bring the event to life, Bluewater utilized its Studio West streaming studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The studio’s 20-foot LED wall served as a fully customized digital backdrop, helping create a sleek, branded environment that matched the high-fashion tone of the evening.

Bluewater also provided multi-camera production, lighting, audio, and streaming support to deliver a professional broadcast experience for guests watching from home. Every element was designed to help the virtual event feel seamless, stylish, and engaging from start to finish.

Keeping the Social in Social Distance

Even though guests could not gather in person, Bluewater and Van Andel Institute worked together to make sure attendees still felt like active participants in the evening.

Guests could request songs from DJ Adrian Butler, who streamed music during the virtual lounge experience. Attendees also enjoyed live-streamed entertainment, the virtual fashion presentation, a featured designer appearance, and a virtual silent auction with proceeds supporting Van Andel Institute’s mission.

These interactive elements helped preserve the social energy of Couture for a Cure while giving supporters a new way to experience the event from home.

A Virtual Runway with Real Impact

The 2020 virtual edition of Couture for a Cure transformed a beloved in-person fundraiser into a polished digital experience that still delivered fashion, entertainment, and meaningful support.

Guests were able to take part in the evening from the comfort of their own homes, whether they chose to dress for the runway or enjoy the show more casually. Most importantly, the event continued to bring supporters together around Van Andel Institute’s mission during a year when connection mattered more than ever. That level of collaboration and quick-turn problem solving helped Van Andel Institute bring its vision to life in a new format, while still delivering the elevated experience guests expected from Couture for a Cure.

“The Bluewater team is absolutely top notch. From the very beginning, they helped us think through meeting design, and then fully brought our vision to life,” said Sarah Rollman, Director of Events and Corporate Giving at Van Andel Institute. “Braden was able to react quickly when we had suggestions and the entire Bluewater team worked together to strategize and come up with the solutions we needed. All in all, I would say that this is one of the best virtual platforms out there, with the industry’s top experts running the show.”

Essence Festival recognized the activation as a dynamic and interactive space that brought the spirit of the traditional in-person festival experience to life virtually.

By moving quickly and collaborating closely with UWG and Ford, Bluewater helped create a first-of-its-kind virtual festival presence that kept audiences engaged and gave Ford a meaningful way to show up for the Essence Festival community.
